In the event a crown is damaged, what should I do?
You can either repair the crown, or cut it off and replace it with a new one. Kinder Krowns® are backed by a 100% replacement guarantee on returned, fractured crowns.
Below you will find the step-by-step process that is reviewed in the tutorial:
1. Select approximate crown size prior to preparation. This is done by holding a crown up next to their existing tooth. (This step can be skipped when you are more familiar with choosing crowns.)
2. Gross reduction of tooth (Incisal, Interproximal, Buccal, Lingual). Preparation is very similar to that of plain stainless steel crowns, but it requires slightly more tooth reduction. This increased reduction is necessary to properly fit an appropriately sized crown, making the restoration as natural looking as possible. You will need an extra 15 – 20% tooth reduction. In your initial preparation most dentists use a football-shaped carbide, or 855 tapered diamond. But again, this depends completely on your preference.
a. During sub-gingival reduction, it is important to avoid damaging the gingival tissue. A flame-shaped diamond such as a 368 or a 330 tapered bur can be used for the lingual preparation. These burs can also create a nice feather-edge, or knife-edge margin, which is recommended.
3. Then go through and remove any remaining decay with a slow speed round bur.
a. With the increased reduction you should anticipate more hemorrhage than in a regular stainless steel preparation. Hemorrhage and moisture control are not critical issues for these restorations as with strip crowns or window crowns. If you find yourself often having to reduce too much subgingivally, we offer 1 millimeter short length crowns to help alleviate the problem.
4. Finally, check for any pulp exposure. If you find exposure, treat the pulp as necessary.
5. After the preparation is complete and all of your crowns fit passively, the crowns can be filled with your cement of choice. Many dentists are using a resin-modified glass ionomer, but whatever you use with stainless steel crowns is fine. Fill crown with composite of choice and place on prep.
6. Confirm gingiva is reflected and crown is seated all the way.
7. Use explorer and floss to clean up excess cement.
8. Use Prophy cup and paste to clean up any unseen cement.
9. If desired, use abrasive discs to characterize restoration by rounding off distal corners.
What type of cement should I use to place Kinder Krowns® - Pediatric Crowns?
Whatever you use to cement regular stainless steel crowns can be used to cement Kinder Krowns®. The cement of choice by the majority of dentists is a resin-modified glass ionomer, although straight glass ionomers are certainly adequate.
Can Kinder Krowns® - Pediatric Crowns be shortened?
If you find that regular length crowns are routinely too long, we also offer 1mm shortened crowns. This will not only save you time, but it will also save wear and tear on the composite interface. If you need to shorten a crown, you may use of of the following techniques. *Do not use a scissors to shorten these crowns. You may shorten the crown by using a sandpaper disk, fine diamond (slow speed), soft stone (green or white), or a coarse rubber wheel. You should grind horizontal to the composite metal junction. As will all composites, carbides should be avoided, as they can set up fracture problems at a later date. After shortening, you may also want to feather the composite at the margin if needed, and polish as you would any other composite.
Can I order my Kinder Krowns® - Pediatric Crowns to be lefts and rights?
Yes. To simplify ordering and inventory, standard Kinder Krowns® are universally contoured – you can make them right or left by rounding the distal corner if desired. If you prefer to have lefts and rights, we’d be happy to do that for you at no additional charge.

How should I sterilize Kinder Krowns?
